Preface

Written by yorkguides.co.uk
IT is difficult to exaggerate the debt that we owe to Mrs. Esdaile for her work upon English Sculpture. She has opened the eyes of many of this generation to the beauty and worth of the Georgian art in our churches; she has rescued the names of some of the carvers from obscurity, and with patient labour has found and, with an unfailing instinct, attributed the names of the sculptors of many of our monuments, and has shown us how much we owe to those of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Without her help and knowledge, this volume would not have been possible. I should like to express my thanks to the Dean of York; Mr. Chancellor Harrison and the incumbents of the Parish Churches, who have allowed the photographs to be taken; to my wife; to Mr. E. Dewhirst, Mr. D. Jefferson and Mr. G. B. Wood, who have taken the photographs; to Mr. Doherty for help with the Bibliography; to Miss I. Sharpe, Miss Pressley, and to Mr. H. Page
