York to Celebrate Year of the Dog

If you were born in 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982 or 1994 then your Chinese Zodiac sign is the Dog, known most of all for being loyal and faithful. This year York is being faithful to Chinese tradition and celebrating the coming of the Chinese New Year with a city-wide event this month. Here in York we gain a lot from the Chinese community and it’s about time that we put something back to recognise this. A splendid array of traditional Chinese colours were seen yesterday as decorations especially brought over from China were unwrapped. Kejun Yan, a business management student at York St John College, carried the decorations back with her after she had returned to China to visit her family over Christmas.

York’s new National Centre for Early Music is spearheading the event to recognise the Year of the Dog, which builds up to a family festival in the Museum Gardens on Sunday, January 29 at 3pm – there will be Korean dancers from the Choi Jung Im Dance Company, the Leeds-based lion dancing troupe Oceans Apart and Chinese craft stalls.

The director of the National Centre for Early Music said, “We have created some fantastic opportunities for everyone to get involved this year.
"You can take part in lantern and kite making workshops, listen to Chinese music, join in music and dance workshops and visit an oriental market in Coppergate.
"This is the third year that the city has staged New Year celebrations and we are delighted to have so many partners supporting us."

Some of the events require tickets that can be obtained from the NCEM Box Office on 01904 658338 or by using the secure online booking system at www.ncem.co.uk.

Brochures for the Chinese Festival can also be obtained from the NCEM – the festival begins on Saturday the 14th and ends on the 29th of January.
