THE University of York is the highest climber in a league table of the world's leading 100 institutions for biomedicine. York's ranking of 34th reflects the growing research power of its Departments of Biology and Chemistry and the success of the Hull York Medical school which was established two years ago. The Times Higher Education Supplement rankings were topped by Harvard, with Cambridge and Oxford second and third.York was the seventh placed UK institution in the rankings, which were based on ratings of a 2,400-strong panel of academics and medical scientists with citations per paper in biomedicine achieved by authors from the 100 universities. York's Department of Biology is one of the leading centres for biological teaching and research in the UK, with a top ranking of five for research quality. It teaches degree courses and undertakes research across the whole spectrum of modern biology, from molecular genetics and biochemistry to ecology. Its biomedical research includes an Immunology and Infection Unit, work on infertility and three separate research teams studying cancer. The Hull York Medical School was established by the Universities of Hull and York in partnership with the NHS to answer a national need for more doctors. The Department of Chemistry is also rated five for the quality of its research. It undertakes a range of biomedical research including cancer imaging and drugs discovery. A number of York's partners in the Worldwide Universities Network also appear in the table, including the University of California San Diego, Washington, and Manchester. |
