Leeds Today by Vicki Robinson
THE sky above Leeds was transformed into a sea of light as the city celebrated bonfire night – a day early – in explosive fashion
The biggest party was at Roundhay Park where an estimated 60,000 people gathered to watch a spectacular display. Hundreds of fireworks – 800kg of them to be precise – delighted the crowds who braved chilly temperatures. One, Hannah Jenkins, nine, from Moortown, Leeds, said: "It was brilliant. I just wish it could have gone on forever. It's much better than the ones we have in our back garden!" The event, the biggest in West Yorkshire and one of the largest in the country, was organised by Leeds City Council's Leisure Services Department. The dazzling display, including huge rockets and parachutes, lasted almost half an hour. Other organised events were staged at East End Park, Bramley Park, Woodhouse Moor and Springhead Park in Rothwell. An event at Middleton Park had to be cancelled due to health and safety concerns. Leeds City Council executive member for leisure, Coun John Procter, said: "Bonfire night is the most spectacular night of the year in Leeds, with the sky filled with fireworks everywhere you look. "The Council-run bonfires are always hugely popular and this year was no exception." This year's bonfire events are extra special as 2005 marks the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, when York plotter Guy Fawkes was thwarted in his attempt to blow up Parliament. A symphony of church bells will ring out across York tonight to mark the anniversary.
