THE Vikings are back – camped in York's Coppergate Square to celebrate a winter nights festival. The Jorvik Viking Centre is staging the festival of Vetrnaetr throughout the half-term school holiday. Visitors to the encampment outside Jorvik can try their hand at jewellery making, producing bracelets and necklaces inspired by Viking designs. Jorvik's own Viking poet, Adrinskald, will lead a day of poems and sagas tomorrow. They will include a giant journey poem around the Square. On Thursday and Friday the Vikings will be preparing for Hallowe'en – helping young visitors to make terrifying masks. A Jorvik Hallowe'en for Creepy Kids will be held on Saturday evening when spirits from the Viking underworld will escort children on a tour of the visitor centre. The evening is for five to 11-year-olds and will include a story-telling saga from a mysterious Norse creature and a short gruesome play by some of the resident Viking spirits. Children will get a Jorvik goody bag of Halloween treats. The Vetrnaetr celebrations are open daily from 11am to 3pm. Most events are free with just a small charge for jewellery and mask-making activities. The Jorvik Halloween for Creepy Kids is £6.50 for children and £3 for adults. Pre-booking is recommended on 01904 543403. Children must be accompanied by an adult. |
