James Reed (Yorkshire Post) SHEFFIELD is the best Yorkshire city for students worried about their finances, according to a new survey. The city is ranked fifth out of 24 university towns and cities nationwide, based on how cost-effective they are for students living there. Leeds was 11th, down five from last year, while York was 17th, making it one of the more expensive places to study. The Royal Bank of Scotland came up with the league table, based on how much it costs for students to live in each town, compared to how much they can earn through part-time work. York students earn around £5.16 an hour, compared to a nationwide average of £6.02, while their Sheffield counterparts enjoy the lowest rent in the country, at £55 a week. The survey also reveals the contribution students make to the Yorkshire economy, with those in Leeds alone expected to spend £277m on rent and expenses over the next academic year. Claire Gill, 21, is about to start her fourth year at Leeds University, studying English Literature. She said she worked full-time during holidays to try to avoid having a part-time job in termtime, when it might interfere with her studies. Anne McGiilvray, head of student banking at RBS, said 30 to 40 per cent of students in Yorkshire underestimated how much they needed for rent and living costs. London took first place in the cost-effectiveness league, with the cost of living off set by higher potential earnings. |
