The National Railway Museum will be marking 100 years since Edith Nesbit's heartwarming tale was first published in London Magazine in 1905.

It was published in book form a year later and has not been out of print since.
During the nine-day celebration, which starts tomorrow, visitors will have the chance to step on the footplate of the locomotive Lord Mayor, used in the 1970 film inspired by the novel.
The engine will be decorated with bunting, flags and flowers to recreate the story's final scene.
Tutors from York University's Centre for Lifelong Learning will be holding a two-part creative writing session inspired by the novel on Monday which is open to adults and children aged over nine years
Visitors will have the opportunity to meet and talk to the Old Gentleman, played by Richard Clayton, who will be inside the period carriage featured in the original film.
There will also be a daily viewing of the film, which starred Dinah Sheridan, Bernard Cribbins and Jenny Agutter, as well as live theatre performances of different episodes from the story.
The National Railway Museum programmes manager, Paul Bisson, said: "The Railway Children was one of the first books to be written especially for children and its vividness gives it an exciting authenticity achieved by very few children's writers.
"It is a timeless adventure story, which has passed down the generations, and holds a very special place in people's hearts, adults and children alike.
"The NRM is very pleased to be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first publication of this wonderful book by offering a fascinating variety of things based on the story for all the family to get involved in."
