Paul Jeeves (Yorkshire Post) A TIMETABLE outlining the ancient ceremony that will culminate in the enthronement of the new Archbishop of York was announced yesterday. The Bishop of Birmingham, Dr John Sentamu, was named last month as the man who will take on the second most senior post in the Church of England and his enthronement ceremony will be performed at York Minster during a service on November 30. While the official process of taking on the role of archbishop is steeped in history, it will be the enthronement service which will be most eagerly awaited in many quarters of the Church. The service itself will have a broad set format, although the new archbishop will have the chance to stamp his own personality on the enthronement by helping shape aspects of the ceremony. The Ugandan-born former barrister and judge will become Britain's first black archbishop when he officially assumes his new role later this year. The Dean of York, Keith Jones, said: "York Minster is where Dr John Sentamu will in the coming years exercise his ministry of leadership, inspiration and teaching. "Holding the ancient title of Primate of England, his influence will extend far beyond the Diocese of York, and even the Northern Province, and we look forward eagerly to welcoming him among us, and working with him in years to come." The Department for Constitutional Affairs yesterday confirmed the timetable of events leading up to the enthronement. Later this month on July 21, York Minster's College of Canons will be summoned by the Crown to choose Bishop Sentamu by election as the new archbishop. While the meeting will remain private, the Dean of York will publicly announce the result of the election afterwards. Then on October 5, Bishop Sentamu's election will be confirmed at a private ceremony in the Church of St Mary-le-Bow in London, by the Archbishop of Canterbury assisted by six senior bishops appointed by the Crown as Royal Commissioners. It is at this ceremony that Bishop Sentamu formally becomes the Archbishop of York. Attendance at the service is by invitation only. On October 20, Bishop Sentamu will pay formal homage to the Queen in private at Buckingham Palace, accompanied by a senior bishop as Clerk of the Closet. Then on November 30, the new archbishop will be enthroned during a service at York Minster beginning at 11.30am. Attendance at the service is by invitation or by ticket, a limited number of which will be available to the public. Applications can be sent to the Dean and Chapter of York, Precentor's Secretary (Enthronement), Church House, Ogleforth, York YO1 7JN. Tickets will be issued in early October. |
