More Parking Restrictions To Speed Up Buses In York |

By Jonathan Malory Over 400 people have protested against plans to do away with their residential parking spaces to create a corridor for buses to fast-track their way along Heslington Road and be separated from the normal flow of traffic. The £3 million scheme also includes fitting buses with microchips that force traffic lights to change to green as they approach. Though the new scheme would mean an ultra speedy route between York University, town and Acomb, local residents feel they are being swept aside in regard to their parking needs. The new faster buses are set to begin running from April 2006 with the service 4 route mentioned above. Director of City Strategy Bill Woolley said, "The council is committed to working in partnership with First York to introduce a new concept in bus travel to the city. The vision is for a high quality bus corridor, which provides an unimpeded path for bus services similar to a tramway. York is one of only a handful of cities to have been chosen to trial the new flagship service and will be the first to see the new vehicles in operation." Mr Woolley also says, "It is recognised the introduction of clearway orders for both bus stops and other locations along the route will reduce the availability of on-street parking along some locations along Route 4. "This is likely to be the main area of concern raised during the consultations. The council will make every effort to adjust the individual bus stop designs or periods of operation to accommodate local residents. "In addition, residents will be consulted about alternatives to on-street parking to enable them to be provided as far as it practicable." |
