Yorkshire Post David Parkin Renewable Fuels is contracting with farmers and landowners in Dumfries-shire and Cumbria for the establishment of up to 3,700 hectares of willow over the next six years. Out of the 220,000 oven-dried tonnes of fuel required for the station every year it is expected that up to 45,000 oven-dried tonnes a year will come from locally grown willow. Bob Smith, managing director of Renewable Fuels, commented: "The E.ON biomass plant is crucial in identifying a direction for the UK's energy industry. It is imperative that we increase our use of local and natural resources for power generation and the biomass plant will be a great example of this. "Renewable Fuels is already making significant progress in contracting with local farmers as more and more growers recognise willow as an economic, environmental and financially viable crop." The Lockerbie station, which will be able to supply enough green power to meet the needs of about 70,000 homes and displace the emission of 140,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases every year when completed in 2007. |
