Mark Branagan (Yorkshire Post) Organisers of this year's Yorkshire Air Show are braced for huge visitor numbers following record advanced tickets sales and are advising people to arrive early to beat the traffic. To help keep queues to a minimum, Elvington Events is staging the Yorkshire Post- sponsored event this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, August 21-22), to avoid the Bank Holiday congestion on the A64 at the end of the month. Plenty of activities are being laid on to keep people entertained, including free entry to the Yorkshire Air Museum from 9.30am. This museum features a unique collection of over 40 internationally recognised aircraft, including the world's only complete Halifax bomber, and visitors are advised to get there early to give themselves plenty of time to look round. In addition, there will be lots of non-flying exhibits including the Starchaser Rocket, one of the first privately funded space rockets in the world, plus vintage and military vehicles and an array of stands selling souvenirs, clothing, memorabilia and refreshments. Event director Ken Cothliff was not surprised at the enormous interest this year. He added: "The line up this year is more impressive than ever, the headline item being the RAF's new Eurofighter Typhoon, appearing at one it's first airfield displays outside an RAF station. "This will be a truly awesome display and one not to be missed. "The second item of military hardware new to the show is the mighty Boeing Chinook twin-rotor helicopter – another awesome aircraft to display." The Red Arrows will be performing on both days. Although the four hour show spectacular starts at 1pm on both days the gates will be open at 8.30am. n Elvington Airfield is seven miles to the south-east of the city of York on the B1228 York to Howden Road. The air show will be signposted from the A64 trunk road (Leeds-Scarborough) and all other major routes inbound to York. |
