Lyndsey Wheatcroft of Blackpool took part in a photo/video shoot along York’s Stonegate, renowned for having the highest shop rent in Europe, last May wearing high-heeled, black, knee-length boots and nothing else. She claims that the shocked reactions were a surprise to her; obviously Lyndsey was unaware of how prudish most Brits still are about their naked bodies. In June this year Steve Gough and his girlfriend Melanie Roberts started walking from Land's End to John o’Groats, also as naked as nature intended. Steve, like Lyndsey, believed that we as a nation are far too uptight about our naked bodies and that it should not be an issue in today’s society. For not wishing to wear clothes, Steve is now in Saughton Prison, Edinburgh and looking forward to Christmas there. The problem could be many folks misguided and myopic perception of nudity, mistaking it for pornography. In some people’s cases, like the above, their first reaction on seeing someone naked is to run and call the police. With this sort of reaction what kind of message are we sending to ourselves? Are we honestly supposed to believe that our own bodies are a crime simply by being seen? Are we that repulsive that we would rather be locked away in a prison cell than seen in public with artificial covering? Lyndsey Wheatcroft was fined £250 yesterday by magistrates in Selby who believe our natural form is something that shouldn’t be seen, despite the glaring fact that we all already know what it looks like. Jas Elliot, Lyndsey’s photographer, was also fined £250 and ordered to give up her camera’s memory card. It seems hard to believe that authorities in the 21st Century are still treating the public like children, as if they cannot handle seeing a naked human when they see one every day of every week of every year of their lives at home. It’s almost pathetic that local rags are still cow-towing to old-fashioned ideas, making these people out to be criminals and tantamount to perverts simply for stripping off their clothes with such antiquated hogwash as, “The stunt took place in the mid-afternoon on May 25 when Stonegate was busy with shoppers, including elderly couples, tourists and families with young children.” Almost pathetic, but mostly sad that being naked is considered a stunt, something that elderly couples, tourists and families with young children should never have to see, even though we know they do see it every day. |
