IT'S the county which made pudding part of a Sunday roast and tea just like it used to be – Yorkshire was a cause for celebration in Wakefield earlier this week. (Wakefield Today) Shoppers got to sample lots of tasty treats in the precinct on Monday to help mark Yorkshire Day. And, last weekend, visitors from Wakefield and surrounding districts flocked to Nostell Priory last weekend to enjoy a taste of Yorkshire’s country life. Coun Brian Holmes, cabinet member for culture, tourism and sport, was on-hand to dish out some of the county’s finest cheese, sausage and beer on Monday, which aimed to make people more aware of the county’s history and heritage. Yorkshire Day was founded by the Yorkshire Ridings Society following the government’s re-organisation of the county boundaries in 1974. Coun Holmes, said: “Yorkshire Day celebrations have been gathering support for 30 years and putting Wakefield products on show is an ideal way to show our contribution to this special day in the region’s calendar.” The event was organised by Wakefield’s tourism services team. Local delicatessen Cryer and Scott supplied cheese and sausage for the occasion and beer was dished out by Fernandes Brewery. Meanwhile, at Nostell Priory traditional meats, fruit wines and liquers, and homemade preserves and chutneys were just some of the treats on offer in the food hall, where small companies and individuals displayed their produce for all to try. For more exotic tastebuds, exhibitors included greek olives in homemade marinades, a mediterranean delicatessen and a continental bakery. The show took place last Saturday and Sunday. Special events took place on both days in the main arena, where crowds were treated to a range of entertainment, including birds of preys, ferret racing, and fly-fishing. |
