Yorkshire ladies dazzle in fashion stakes Kate O'Hara (Yorkshire Post)
IT was a day for glamour, fantastic hats and the most stylish of outfits as Ladies' Day came to York's Ebor meet. It was the second Ladies' Day the racecourse has hosted this year after Royal Ascot came to York in June, but yesterday the Yorkshire ladies showed they ran second to none in the fashion stakes. A carnival atmosphere took hold early as champagne flowed and the jazz band provided a cheerful welcome to the thousands who poured through the gates. Yorkshire's ultra-stylish set were out in force and there was no doubt what was the hottest accessory of the day – a hat. If ever there was a day to wear fabulous head gear then yesterday was it. While grey skies at Ascot constantly threatened a downpour to ruffle expensive feathers, yesterday's conditions were perfect for showing off. Rachael Walsworth, 37, wore one of the most eye-catching creations of the day. Like many, she had chosen a hat from Eleda in Guiseley to top her dress from Emma Somerset, studded with jewels that sparkled in the sunshine. Friend Rachel Kirwan, 30, from Leeds, continued the blue and green theme that could be seen everywhere at Royal Ascot, with a one-off dress from Tunnel and a hat made specially for the day. Ms Walsworth said: "We didn't go to Ascot – who needs it when you have Ebor? It's just as glamorous." For some a hat was simply not enough to keep the baking sun at bay and dentist Clare Jackson from Ripon doubled up with a cute black parasol from Rose Velvet in Harrogate. "I missed out on Ascot so I was determined to be here today. It's really fabulous and nobody could have dared hope for such a beautiful day. If it had been cold or wet I would have been in a linen suit instead – but this outfit just seemed right. The sun gives you the confidence to go for all-out glamour." If there was any theme at all yesterday it was just that – glamour. And while many played it safe with elegant black and white, many were more bold and piled on the colour. Nineteen-year-old student Ruth Tinsley looked striking in her bright red shawl teamed with a poppy red and white dress. Miss Tinsley, from Cawood, who is studying geography at Northumbria University, said she is now hooked on racing since Ascot. "We wouldn't have missed this for the world after coming to Ascot at York. It's absolutely gorgeous – the whole atmosphere makes it just perfect for a girly day out." Two of the most eye- catching hats yesterday were worn by Maxine Ward, 31, of East Morton, near Keighley, and her friend Heather Braham, 42, from Guiseley, who had chosen creations from Eleda. Ms Ward said she had to splash out on an outfit from Harvey Nichols and a bejewelled handbag by Dolce and Gabanna. Ms Braham said: "We spent such a lot of money on these clothes for Ascot that we thought why not come again?" In a Dolce and Gabanna dress and acid green Philip Treacy hat, antique dealer Sarah Vernon, 38, drew approving glances from fellow-racegoers. Heading off to catch the first race, she said: "Maybe it is because of Ascot but today seems to be better than ever. It's all about the glamour on Ladies' Day – and people here have got it in spades." |
