City must wait for Ascot decision

YORK racecourse is still waiting to hear whether it will host Royal Ascot for a second time.

Last month the Royal meeting travelled north to Knavesmire in York during £185m redevelopment work at its home course in Berkshire.
Dates for Royal Ascot 2006, from June 20 to 24, have been confirmed by the British Horseracing Board (BHB), but Ascot chiefs will not decide until the autumn whether their course will be ready in time.
Ascot spokesman Nick Smith said it was always the intention that the Royal meeting would return to the Berkshire course in 2006 and work was progressing well.
He said the dates on the BHB's fixture list for next year were "set in stone" so their announcement had no bearing on Royal Ascot's ultimate venue for 2006.
York's hosting of the five-day meeting last month was judged a great success and civic leaders and Knavesmire management made it clear they would welcome the chance to host the event for a second time.
However, Mr Smith said Newbury and Newmarket were other contenders to host the Royal meeting should Ascot not be ready in time.
He refused to speculate on the odds of a return trip to York.
