The York Evening Press's seven-year campaign for a national memorial to the women of the Second World War has been praised by former House of Commons speaker Baroness Betty Boothroyd.

The Queen unveiled the £1m bronze monument at Whitehall last month.

Boothroyd sent a personal message thanking the York paper for its "unrivalled campaigning zeal" to ensure there was a monument dedicated to the wartime contribution of British women.

Boothroyd, who is patron of the Women of World War II Memorial Fund charity, said: "The Evening Press played an invaluable role in our sevenyear struggle. At this time of defiant celebration amid renewed danger, we pay tribute to the Yorkshire veterans who inspired our charity, which allowed us to raise the enormous funds we needed and win national support."

Editor Kevin Booth said: "The Evening Press has a strong tradition as a campaigning newspaper and we are proud to be able to include the women's memorial as one of our many successes."
