Lucy Harvey The Duke of York has sent a personal get well message to a South Yorkshire police motorcyclist who was seriously injured following a training exercise for his visit to the county. PC Mark Butler, a father-of-two, had just completed a practice convoy exercise with colleagues in readiness for Prince Andrew's visit to Sheffield when he was hurt in a collision with a lorry at a roundabout near the Meadowhall shopping centre on Tuesday. He sustained serious pelvic and leg injuries and last night remained in the Northern General Hospital in a critical but stable condition. After hearing about the incident, Prince Andrew sent a personally signed letter to Mr Butler saying how sorry he was to learn of the "horrendous collision". He also made an unscheduled visit to see the constable's colleagues yesterday, before completing his official duties. Chief Inspector Liz Watson, head of the South Yorkshire force's road policing group, said: "His letter was such a kind gesture and has meant a lot, not only to Mark's family but to us all in the road policing group. "Mark's colleagues are devastated and shocked by what happened and at one stage we considered having to arrange a team of motorcyclists from a neighbouring force to escort the Prince. "However our motorcyclists were determined to carry out their duties as a symbol of respect and support for Mark." Accident investigators are still appealing for witnesses to the collision between PC Butler's police bike and an articulated lorry at 11.40am at the junction of Meadowhall Way and Sheffield Road. Anyone with information should call 0114 220 2970. |
