THE traditions of generations of craftsmen at York Minster are explored in a new exhibition.
Canadian artist Crystal Howie spent a month observing the skills of carvers and masons in the Minster stoneyard, and her paintings reflecting the experience are on show in the chapter house vestibule.
Ms Howie, who moved to York last year, is from Saskatchewan and studied fine arts at the University of Regina in Canada.
"It was a real privilege working alongside the carvers and masons," said Ms Howie.
"Not only are they extremely knowledgeable about stone carving and the Minster, but they are also eloquent and poetic.
"Each day I spent in the stoneyard I observed chisels, mallets, and human bodies defiantly overcoming the resistance of the stone. I have incorporated the visual language of stonemasonry into my paintings," she added.
The Keeping in Tradition exhibition, which runs until September 30, centres on the role the Minster carvers will play in the £30m restoration of the east front, an appeal backed by the Yorkshire Post.
