Mark Branagan History is about to be written in the skies again after organisers of the Yorkshire Air Show – sponsored by the Yorkshire Post – confirmed that all the aircraft they wanted to take part were coming. Ticket sales have been high this year on the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Public interest in the conflict and the military has seldom been greater. Yesterday event director Ken Cothliff said it was all systems go on the organisational front, confirming that all the aircraft invited to the show – at Elvington Airfield, near York, on Saturday and Sunday, August 20-21 – would be appearing. He said: "There have been no changes in the line-up. The big thing is the first public appearance in Yorkshire of the Eurofighter Typhoon, the RAF's new air superiority fighter, which will eventually replace the Tornado." Squadron Leader Matt Elliot, from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, will be at the controls. The other new star of the show not seen before by the public is the mighty Chinook twin-rotor helicopter, flown by Flt Lt Carl Zarecky. Britain's answer to the space shuttle, the Star Chaser rocket, will be joining the static displays, which will also feature the return of the Dutch F-16 fighters. Mr Cothliff added: "We had a meeting last night and are really geared up. We have everything organised and are literally ready to go. Ticket sales are good but we want to crash the barrier. "Ticket sales each year at the end of the event still tend to be about the same. What we really want is to make a big splash. It is all about supporting your local air show – supported by your local paper. "We desperately want people to support it because it is the last surviving airfield- based show in Yorkshire, which is the cradle of aviation in the UK, and without the public support it will go the way of all the other air shows." VIP tickets are sold out and the event's own ticket line on 01759 305 851 closed yesterday. Tickets will be available from the Yorkshire Post until Monday – details below – and over the counter at Mr Cothliff's Air Supply Aviation store in Yeadon, near Leeds. Yorkshire Air Show, organised by Elvington Events Ltd, is the sixth air show under the present organisation, although the event has been taking place since 1990. But Mr Cothliff said this year's show featured the biggest military presence ever, including the Harrier jump jet, famous from the 1982 Falklands War, and two historic Royal Navy aircraft – Sea Fury, one of the fastest piston-engined planes, and the Sea Hawk jet attacker. There will be displays by RAF Falcons parachutists and aerobatics from the Red Arrows on both show days. More information about the event is available at www. elvington.org. n The Yorkshire Post is offering a discount on tickets purchased in advance but your written request or telephone call must be received by 5.30pm on Monday when the offer ends.
