The retro-choir
Beyond the rood screen the eighth bay of the nave served as the retro-choir where aged and infirm monks were allowed to sit during the offices. The ninth bay was occupied by chapels of St. Mary and St. Bernard on each side of the central doorway of the pulpitum, a screen which filled the whole of the tenth bay.
The easternmost bay of the south aisle has a doorway from the church into the cloister. There was a screen shutting this bay off from the transept, and inside the doorway stands the base of a holy water stoup for the use of monks entering the church from the cloister. The marble basin of the stoup is preserved in the abbey museum. |
